In April 2022, the researchers showed the top 3 main messengers that people choose to text their friends and colleagues on daily basis:
- WhatsApp: 31% of the world
- Facebook Messenger: 7% of the world
- Telegram: 4% of the world
WhatsApp is the world leader, snagging the top-messaging app spot in 60 countries. These include Argentina, Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kenya, the Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and more.
Facebook Messenger has restored its second place knocking Telegram down the list. Last November, the app was third, being the most popular title in 13 countries. As of April 2022, Facebook Messenger is still the most popular choice for texting in the United States, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Hungary, New Zealand, the Philippines, Poland, Sweden, Thailand, and more.
Telegram has lost popularity in comparison to its position six months ago. Last year, the app was ranked second and was the most popular app in 14 countries. In April 2022, the app was top in 8 countries, including Armenia, Cambodia, Jordan, and Moldova.
What about other messengers
Although less popular than the top three, other messaging apps are also trending worldwide:
Viber has a strong presence in Europe, topping our list in Bulgaria, Greece, and Ukraine.
Line is maintaining popularity in Asia, with the highest performance in Japan and Taiwan.
Apps that only claim one country include KakaoTalk (South Korea), Zalo (Vietnam), WeChat (China), and IMO (Qatar).
